A formal garden defined by handcut bluestone terracing and structured planting — timeless and built to last.
The brief
The clients had recently completed a significant renovation of their period home and wanted the garden to match — refined, enduring, and crafted with the same attention to material quality. They were drawn to a formal European aesthetic but wanted the garden to remain liveable and not overly precious. A level change of nearly a metre across the site presented an opportunity rather than an obstacle.
Our approach
We resolved the level change with three bluestone-clad terraces, each defined by low hedges of Buxus microphylla and edged in hand-selected Harkaway bluestone. Clipped topiary provides year-round structure, while a restrained palette of white roses and lavender softens the hard lines through spring and summer. A generous central lawn ties the terraces together and gives the family a place to simply be outside. All stonework was laid by specialist masons using traditional dry-set methods.
